De ouderwetse studeerkamergeleerde doctor Peter Kien, sinoloog, wil het liefst geïsoleerd leven te midden van zijn reusachtige collectie boeken, maar dat neemt zijn omgeving hem niet in dank af. Hij wordt bestolen en bedrogen, en in een huwelijk gelokt door zijn malicieuze huishoudster. Zij beperkt zijn leefruimte steeds verder en zet hem uiteindelijk zelfs het huis uit.

Kiens wederwaardigheden in de grote boze buitenwereld maken hem krankzinnig – in een laatste daad van wanhoop steekt hij zijn geliefde bibliotheek in brand. Hij komt daarbij in de vlammen om.


Het martyrium (1935) houdt ons nog altijd een spiegel voor. Het toont de uitwassen van hebzucht, vervreemding en obsessie met macht. Cannetti’s unieke stijl en grote vertelkracht maken dit misantropische meesterwerk onvergetelijk.
