Meer en meer is het inzicht gegroeid dat al in het eerste levensjaar van een kind de fundamenten gelegd worden voor het spreken en dat die fundamenten van wezenlijk belang zijn voor de hele verdere spraak- en taalontwikkeling. Inzicht in die opbouw kan ook de oorsprong van eventuele latere spraakproblemen duidelijk maken.

Dit boek gaat in op de mogelijkheden om de spraakontwikkeling van een baby vanaf de geboorte te beschrijven en te onderzoeken. De nadruk ligt daarbij op de methode waarmee deze spraak-in-ontwikkeling vastgelegd en voor onderzoek toegankelijk gemaakt kan worden. Het registreren van baby-uitingen vereist namelijk heel specifieke technieken, die sterk afwijken van de manier waarop de spraak van volwassenen en van oudere kinderen wordt vastgelegd.

Het boek is bedoeld voor allen die zich bezighouden met de ontwikkeling van de spraak en communicatie van baby’s vanaf de geboorte. Dat kunnen logopedisten zijn, audiologen, of artsen op consultatiebureaus, maar ook leidsters op kinderdagverblijven en geïnteresseerde ouders. Bovendien is dit boek voor studenten een prima middel om baby-uitingen te leren beschrijven, zodat het vergelijken van de uitingen en daardoor het opsporen van eventuele afwijkende ontwikkelingen mogelijk wordt.

FLOOR VAN BEINUM was tot 2004 universitair hoofddocent (associate professor) Fonetische Wetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en sindsdien gelieerd gastonderzoeker van het Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication.

LILLIAN VAN 'T HULLENAAR-DOPPEN is meerdere jaren verbonden geweest aan de HAN (Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen) als docent bij de opleiding Logopedie. Tegelijkertijd was zij medewerker van het Institut für Audiopaedagogik te Solingen (Universiteit van Keulen).
