Wat is medicinale cannabis? Bij welke medische indicaties helpt het en hoe? Weinig kwesties zijn zo controversieel als medicinale cannabis. Hoewel verschillende landen medicinale cannabis op een gereguleerde manier aan hun bevolking aanbieden, blijven terzelfder tijd andere artsen en politici de medische eigenschappen van cannabis ontkennen. Het lijkt wel of er twee verschillende waarheden naast elkaar bestaan. Het boek analyseert de maatschappelijke en politieke evoluties die hiertoe leidden.

Het boek beschouwt het medicinaal cannabisgebruik eveneens uit medischethisch perspectief en kijkt naar welke plaats medicinale cannabis in de volksgezondheid kan innemen. Een elftal patiënten getuigen hoe medicinale cannabis, nadat de reguliere medicijnen tekortschoten, hun gezondheidstoestand verbeterde.

Het boek wordt ingeleid door voorwoorden van arts en professor in de huisartsgeneeskunde (RUG) Dirk Avonts, tevens hoofdredacteur van Domus Medica en van arts, ethicus en professor (ULB en UBergen) Dominique Lossignol. Hij werkt als gespecialiseerd pijnarts en hoofd van het ethisch comité aan het Brussels Bordet kankerinstituut.
