Content
Damasus (ca. 305-384) staat ook wel bekend als de eerste dichtende paus. Een deel van zijn gedichten is nog altijd in Rome te bewonderen, omdat hij ze in kalligra¿sch schrift in steen liet graveren. Zijn poëzie had als doel om kerken, catacomben en begraafplaatsen te verfraaien, maar ook om zijn eigen positie te verstevigen in een hopeloos verdeelde gemeenschap van Romeinse christenen. De dichtende paus brengt de overgeleverde epigrammen van Damasus voor het eerst in het Latijn en Nederlands samen en biedt inzicht in de historische, archeologische en culturele context waarin deze tot stand kwamen. Zo komt de pauselijke poëzie weer tot leven en vormt Damasus’ poëzie een literaire gids naar het vroegchristelijke Rome van de vierde eeuw.
